Acting means understanding, not thinking. Understanding from the inside, internalizing, absorbing, feeling. Feeling myself, feeling the others, the space and time around us. Feeling together with the others: empathizing. Sensing. Perceiving. Understanding.
We are all similar: we feel empathy. For me, this is the essence of acting. Identification with the role is a by-product. The text is a skeleton on which empathy grows, a bone that will never come to life without flesh and blood, but without that no vertebrate animal can move.
Am I a vertebrate animal? Every production, every role, every character is a new biomechanical investigation. Acting is zoology. And anthropology.
